Ever since 2014, Gemix has been a popular online slot with casino players. With a 7x7 grid and just one single payline, it has struck a chord with players due to its colourful design and engaging gameplay.
Drawing on the concept of Bejeweled, or Candy Crush in the modern age, Gemix offers a slot experience that resembles a classic non-gambling game.
The game’s unique setup, addictive gameplay and extra features have made this into a smash hit. Read on to learn more about the popular online slot Gemix.
Gemix is played on a 7x7 board, rather than the most conventional reels found in most online slots. The game features three different worlds (which we’ll get back to), so there is a total of three different backgrounds.
The miner’s world is set in a Hobbiton-like environment in a dark forest at night. The miner himself seems like a happy chap, with a big brown beard, a headlamp and a lantern ready to go to work.
The princess’s world is very princess-y. Think a big, pink castle at the top of a hill. The surrounding areas have trees covered with various gems, and the big-eyed princess is dressed in a purple and pink dress, holding a lollipop.
The wizard’s world also resembles a Hobbiton environment, but this time, there is a little house set in front of a gorgeous lake. The wizard looks like wizards normally do, with a massive white beard and a blue hat and a cape. In his hands he holds … Wait for it… A magic wand and a spell book.
The game symbols consist of various gems in different shapes and colours, not unlike in the game Bejeweled. On the left-hand side of the screen, you find your current level, a sort of container that keeps track of your most recent winning combinations, and your total win.
Underneath the playing area, you conveniently find all the game controls, while the right-hand side offers up the Charge Meter and the World Map, two important features we will explain in further detail below.
Gemix doesn’t utilize conventional reels. Instead, it has cascading symbols, where symbols fall from above the playing area. When a cluster of 5 or more connecting (horizontally and vertically) symbols is made, those symbols will disappear from the board, and new symbols will fall from above to fill those spaces.
If this new symbol configuration creates more clusters, they will be cleared, while the player will not be charged an additional “spin.” A round (spin) only ends when no new clusters are completed.
The previously mentioned Charge Meter is a prominent feature in Gemix. The meter accumulates value as symbols are cleared from the board, and no-win features that kick in at random and provide second chances at creating clusters.
When the meter is fully charged, all wins that occur until no additional clusters are made receive a 3x multiplier. Once no more clusters are made, one of the following features will then be triggered:
Chain Lightning: Two corner symbols appear on the board and shoot out an electrical arc. All symbols that are hit with this lightning are transformed into the more valuable of the two corner symbols.
Light Beam: Light rays shoot out in both the horizontal and vertical directions. All affected symbols are then transformed.
Crystal Warp: A random symbol on the board is selected. This and all other instances of this symbol are then transformed into another random symbol, increasing its frequency and making winning clusters far more likely.
Nova Blast: One random symbol on the board explodes. Adjacent symbols are destroyed by this explosion, cleared symbols are paid to the player, and new symbols cascade from above, giving the player additional opportunities at completing clusters.
The concept and design of these Charge Meter features resemble the ones found in Reactoonz, another Play’n GO slot classic.
As you clear symbols from the game board, selected locations on the board will change the background colour. This is the pattern for the current world you are playing, and you can at all times see the pattern on the right-hand side of the board.
If you complete all the patterns on the board, you will “level up” to a new level and receive a new background pattern. These worlds will have different “no-win Wilds” which can activate on spins that don’t result in a win. Wild features vary based on the level:
Miner’s World: Up to 10 Wild symbols fall from above and land on random positions on the reels.
Princess’ World: An edge symbol is picked as a starting point and turns into a Wild. This Wild symbol then spreads throughout the grid, transforming symbols into Wilds until it reaches another edge symbol.
Wizard’s World: Up to 8 sticky Wilds appear on the board and remain in place during cascades when winning clusters are cleared. These sticky Wilds will disappear if the Charge Meter is filled. If this occurs, a random Crystal Charge feature will be triggered as soon as the sticky Wilds are removed from the board.
As you play through the levels, you accumulate a ‘world bonus’. You will be rewarded with this bonus if you manage to play through all three levels.
Gemix is a slot with medium volatility, which means that you will win relatively often, although you might not land the life-changing wins that you can expect from jackpot slots like Mega Moolah.
The game lacks a Free Spins round, but the Charge Meter and the randomly triggered ‘no-win’ Wild symbols ensures a steady flow of wins.
Gemix bears a resemblance to another wildly popular mobile game, Candy Crush, and the Play ‘n Go slot plays excellently across all modern devices and operating systems. The game controls are readily available on the playing screen, and you are ready to play as long as you have an Internet connection.
We apologize in advance for the lazy pun, but Gemix truly is a gem from Play’n GO. They’ve come up with a slot that feels more like a standard mobile game, and this slot will appeal to lovers of Bejeweled, Candy Crush and all similar games in between.
There is a distinct lack of a Free Spins feature, something we do miss, but the sheer entertainment value of the game makes up for some of it. The slot is bordering on being addictive, as a lot of games in this genre are. We, therefore, wish to remind that online gambling is meant to be done purely for entertainment purposes. On your Wildz account, you will find several Responsible Gaming tools that help you play within your limits.
We enjoy the three different levels and how you need to clear certain patterns to advance to a new level. Frankly, we wish it was a few more of them in this game. The fact that each world, or level, has different bonus features also ensures a varied and entertaining gaming experience. We have no problem understanding why Gemix has turned into such a popular online slot.
