French roulette

Back to Guide

Here at Wildz Casino, we’re proud to offer you an array of online roulette games to play. You may have noticed that several of the games you can find both in our Live Casino and digital casino follow the French roulette format.

French roulette, much like European roulette, is a game that uses a 37-number wheel. This means players like yourself have more betting opportunities, with each wager offering a better return value than the American variant. But that’s not all; there are some subtle differences in French roulette rules that will undoubtedly make it your first choice of game to play.

A French Roulette table layout is slightly different

At Wildz online casino, our French roulette features a different table layout and wheel to the more modern American variant. Firstly, the wheel used in French and European roulette only has 37 red and black pockets –numbered 0 to 36. Then, the playing tables themselves are different too.

On the French table, ‘outside’ bets are split between two long sides, while each box contains the original French terms. These are:

  • Impair & Pair (odd/even) – the boxes where you can place odd or even bets.
  • Manque & Passe (low/high) – the boxes where you can place low (1-18) and high bets (19-36).
  • Premier douzaine (P12 first twelve), Moyenne douzaine (M12 middle twelve) & Derniere douzaine (D12 last twelve) - the boxes where you can place dozen bets.

How to play French roulette online?

At Wildz Casino, we’ve made it as simple as possible for you to play and enjoy French roulette. Although there are differences in the wheel and table used in French roulette, it’s still played in the same way you might be used to in some of our other roulette variants. You can place all the traditional bets that you would expect during a roulette game:

**Inside bets **

  • Straight-up or single number – pays 35:1
  • Split – pays 17:1
  • Street (three numbers) - pays 11:1
  • Corner (group of four numbers) - pays 8:1
  • Line (two adjacent rows) - pays 5:1

**Outside bets **

  • Column (one of three columns of numbers) - pays 2:1
  • Douzaine (dozen bets) - pays 2:1
  • Rouge/Noir (red or black) - pays 1:1
  • Pair/Impair (even or odd) - pays 1:1
  • Manque/Passe (low or high) - pays 1:1

Why play French roulette instead of American roulette?

Choosing which type of roulette variant to play typically depends on which offers the most value by having the lowest house edge. In French roulette games, the house edge can be slashed to as little as 1.35% - an RTP casinoaverage that simply cannot be ignored.

How does the French Roulette version compare to other game variants?

Our roulette games are some of the most popular casino games you can access here at Wildz, but French roulette has a special place in our loyal customers’ hearts. The French variant is considered the “purest” form of the game since it’s played using the original wheel, while the French names on the table add extra authenticity to gameplay. Then there’s also the addition of offering the lowest house edge of any roulette game, which makes it pretty hard to resist.

Are there special bets?

French roulette rules feature two additional bets that could give you a second chance if you lose. If the ball lands in the zero pocket and you’ve placed an outside bet, you’ll have the opportunity to play En Prison or La Partage bets. Under En Prison, you can receive half of your stake back as compensation or place the same bet again. Meanwhile, under La Partage, you’ll automatically receive back half of your losing stake.

Under these rules, you’ll also be able to place more advanced bets unique to the French game. These are:

  • Voisins du Zéro (Neighbours of zero) - corner, split or street bets covering numbers 22 - 25
  • Le Tiers du Cylindre (Thirds of the wheel) - split bets covering numbers 27 - 33
  • Jeu Zéro (Zero game) - a mini version of Voisins du Zéro with bets on the four numbers to the left of the zero and the two to the right
  • Orphelins (Orphans) - split or straight bets on the numbers not covered above
  • Finales (Finals) - individual or split bets on numbers ending with either 2 or 5, e.g 5, 25, 35 etc.
